- Herrenknecht AG’s Tunnel Boring Machine Turnaround

The Hampton Roads Expansion Tunnel project stands as one of the most ambitious infrastructure developments in Virginia, aiming to improve traffic flow and connectivity in the region. A key player in this massive undertaking is Herrenknecht AG, a world-renowned manufacturer of tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Their specialized TBM was responsible for carving out the new tunnel beneath the Hampton Roads waterway. A significant milestone in the project was the turnaround of the TBM, a critical phase that ensured smooth progress toward completion.

What is a tbm?

A TBM, or Tunnel Boring Machine, is a massive piece of engineering equipment designed to excavate tunnels through soil and rock. At the front of the machine is a rotating cutter head that grinds through the ground while conveyors and support systems remove the excavated material. Unlike traditional methods such as drilling and blasting, a TBM allows tunnelling to be faster, safer, and more precise.

For the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion, Herrenknecht AG built a custom TBM capable of working under high water pressure and variable ground conditions. This machine, named Mary, was central to driving the new tunnel beneath the Hampton Roads waterway.

The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Expansion Project

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion is designed to ease one of the most congested travel corridors in the U.S. The project adds new twin tunnels and widens portions of the I-64 corridor between Hampton and Norfolk, ultimately improving regional connectivity for commuters, freight, and visitors.

When will the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Expansion Be Completed?

According to official updates, the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion is scheduled for completion in 2025. The turnaround of the TBM marked one of the most significant milestones in keeping the project on track.

Is the Hampton Roads Tunnel Closed?

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel remains open during construction. Crews are working carefully to ensure minimal disruption to daily traffic. Lane closures may occur at scheduled times, but the tunnel itself has not been fully closed to the public.

How Long is the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Closed?

There is no long-term closure. Instead, drivers can expect temporary lane closures, detours, or reduced travel lanes as construction continues. These measures are carefully planned to limit delays while allowing crews to work safely.

The Role of the Tunnel Boring Machine

Tunnel boring machines are essential in modern tunnel construction, providing an efficient and precise method for creating underground passages. For the Hampton Roads Expansion Tunnel, Herrenknecht AG developed a custom-built TBM capable of handling the challenging geological conditions of the area. Designed to operate under high water pressure and through variable soil conditions, the TBM played a crucial role in expanding the existing tunnel infrastructure.

Documenting the Turnaround

As a professional photographer, I had the opportunity to document the intricate process of the TBM turnaround. One of the items we discussed was creating a time-lapse of the whole turnaround process. That required setting up a camera from a point of view in which we could visually see the entire process of the turnaround. The subcontractor, Max Wild, was responsible for the movement of the large TBM machine.

Capturing that entire process from the first movements to the final was unique in how it was done. Documenting the machinery's scale, the engineering's precision and the crews' work and dedication was a remarkable experience. My photography highlights the teamwork and expertise involved in this engineering feat, providing a visual narrative of this critical phase in the project.

The Turnaround Process

One of the most complex aspects of the TBM's operation was its turnaround. Unlike traditional tunnelling projects, where a machine can bore through and exit at the other end, the Hampton Roads project required the TBM to be reversed or repositioned for continued excavation. This process involved:

  • Disassembly and Reassembly: Engineers meticulously dismantled key components of the TBM to reposition it for the return journey.
  • Logistics Coordination: Moving such a massive piece of equipment required precise planning and coordination between engineers, construction crews, and transport specialists.
  • Safety Considerations: Given the depth and environmental constraints of underwater tunnelling, extensive safety measures were in place to protect workers and maintain structural integrity.

The Impact on the Project

The successful turnaround of the TBM marked a significant step forward in the Hampton Roads Expansion Tunnel project. It ensured that excavation could continue efficiently, keeping the project on track for completion. The achievement also underscored the expertise of Herrenknecht AG and the construction teams involved, demonstrating advanced engineering capabilities in large-scale infrastructure projects.

The Hampton Roads Expansion Tunnel is a testament to the power of engineering and innovation, with Herrenknecht AG’s TBM playing a pivotal role in its success. The machine’s turnaround was a crucial milestone, highlighting the precision, coordination, and expertise required to execute such a complex project.

As the expansion progresses toward completion in 2025, this achievement will remain a key example of how modern tunnelling technology is shaping the future of transportation. Through my photography, I have captured the essence of this remarkable effort, preserving the story of the TBM turnaround for history and industry professionals alike.
